Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based reading assessment program that quizzes students on their understanding of books they've read. The program was developed by Renaissance Learning, and consists of comprehension quizzes for books of all reading levels, from beginning readers to adult.
Crestomere School has been using the program since the winter of 2000, and since that time, our library of books and quizzes has grown to over 5000 titles. This year, we've moved to a web-based program that gives our students access to the complete Accelerated Reader library, as well as the ability to take quizzes on literacy and vocabulary skills. This expanded library will allow students to read books (fiction and non-fiction) from a variety of sources including home and public libraries.
Each quiz is worth a certain number of points, depending on the reading level and length of the book. Each student is assigned a reading level range to give them guidance in choosing books appropriate for their abilities. They are also assigned a monthly points goal based on grade level and individual differences. At our monthly assemblies, we recognize those students who have met their monthly goals. Students are also asked to write short summaries of what they've read, usually on a daily basis.
Students have at least a half hour of reading time each day during 38-minute DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) classes at the start of each day. The school handbook contains recommendations on how much students of different ages should be reading at home to support their progress in this critical life skill.
